Working in communications I'm not supposed to use clichés. In our multi-cultural society using sayings that aren't entirely clear to people who don't have English as a first language is a no-no. It's also considered to show a lack of originality. ("The first man who compared woman to a rose was a poet, the second, an imbecile.")
Trouble is, I like them. They get to the point and there is often an amusing visual reference too.
I got this idea from listening to Sounds of the 60s this morning and Bo Diddley's 'You Can't Judge a Book by the Cover' was played. It got me thinking, do these clichés still work in our 21st century, technology-driven world?
So, over the coming weeks or until I get bored I'll be taking on some famous clichés and seeing if they still hold true.
The first, in honour of the man who gave me the idea to do this, will be my study on whether you really can judge a book by its cover.
