Swindon Oasis, 24th October 2009
As a huge fan of The Smiths and occasionally of Morrissey's solo career I
was looking forward to see how he'd get on appearing in my hometown.
I hadn't been to a Mozzer gig since the Smiths split so was prepared to
not know some of the songs he played and suffer the poor acoustics in
the vast sports hall. I wasn't prepared for what happened...
After a great support set by Doll and the Kicks a music video thing played to herald the appearance of the
great man. He greeted us with the words: "Good evening... possibly" and
then it was straight into the crowd-pleaser This Charming Man but as it
ended Morrissey dropped to the floor.
Then it went strange. Someone appeared to get bundled off the stage and
the band left. Had a bottle been thrown, or a punter got on the stage? I
was quite near the back with my wife so we couldn't be sure what had
happened. It was a bit of 'Chinese Whispers' trying to listen in on what
other people had seen.
After a few minutes someone came back on stage to say "we'll keep you
informed" but it was another 20 minutes before we knew that the gig was
over. "Morrissey has left the building...he's seriously ill". People
drifted away, concerned in some cases non-plussed in others.
Then it was home to try and get more news. Twitter was abuzz with rumour
and polarised opinions but it was a couple of hours before we got
confirmation he'd been admitted to a local hospital. After missing one
more date his tour recommenced but there was no coming back to the
Oasis!
