Rupert Holmes: Escape (The Pina Colada Song)

Track of the Week - 29 January 2017

I wrote last week that my work family were preparing for a big event, well now we're through that. It was exhausting but we did it and very successfully too.

If I can find some time I'll put a more personal selection of songs about my week together (it was some week for all sorts of reasons) but for today here's one for my work family.

One of the features at the event was a screen and device where people could ask questions which might be put to the big cheeses on stage later that day. They ranged from the sensible through to the objectionable and in between were the downright odd.

Like one we found on Monday morning which said: "Do you like Pina Coladas and getting caught in the rain?" Lines from this Rupert Holmes song (an everyday tale of a man 'tired of his lady' who looks in the personal ads, likes the sound of someone who turns out to be his lady) which reached number 23 in the UK but was the last US number one of the 1970s.

Now clearly this isn't what the system was meant for but we're not po-faced so thought it was worth replying with other lines in the song "I'm not much into health food but I do like champagne."

In an ideal world that would have been that but this song os so damn catchy it hung around us all week. The company we worked with on the event clearly noticed too as they sent us a 'well done and thank you' message which had this playing in the background.

Wherever we end up and whatever we all go on to do the team will always be thinking about this week when we hear this song (or have a Pina Colada).

(Apparently the chorus originally went 'If you like Humphrey Bogart' but was changed at the last minute to the first cocktail he thought of.)
