Track of the Week - 12 February 2017
Whether I like a song or not that I use in this feature I have at least heard it previously. Until now.
This week I went to see writer, journalist, TV presenter, DJ, etc, Danny Baker on his Cradle to the Stage tour at Swindon's Wyvern Theatre with my friendly colleague Ewan.
If you've listened to any of Baker's radio work you'll know that the man can tell a story and that was the general idea of the evening. He was supposed to run us through a series of slides from his life but was going off on so many tangents he didn't get very far. The evening was a remarkably funny stream of consciousness about things he'd seen, done and people he'd met. I'd have happily taken another couple of hours of it.
One story was about The Human Beast Volume One album. To cut a long story short (not something Baker is good at or that I would want him to do), as a young man, after being unable to sell 25 copies of the vinyl LP of this 1970 prog rock nightmare/masterpiece (delete where applicable), he and his friends used them as air rifle target practice on waste ground near his house.
Years later, in a quiet moment he decides to find out more about the record and discovers it's incredibly rare and copies are trading at nearly £1,500 each.*
I've chosen this track from the album because it was the shortest I could find quickly. If you listen to it, good luck.
* I guess some more copies must have become available since Danny Baker looked into it. It seems to be about £33 now.
