Track of the Week - 16 July 2017
Another week where the connection is slightly convoluted but never mind.
My work has been doing lots of stuff with poets and poetry lately and this week I was lucky enough to attend a masterclass on the subject. If you're a regular reader of this nonsense you might be surprised to hear I like writing so I was after some tips.
Hosted by the lovely and talented Laurie Bolger we learned about free-writing and choosing things from lists and images to get the creative juices going. I'm not sure I have what it takes in the poetry game but that won't stop me trying now and again.
So I bring you The Smiths and Frankly, Mr. Shankly* from the awesome 1986 album The Queen is Dead. Apparently an attempt to 'recreate the vibe' of Sandie Shaw's Puppet On a String it is believed to be a pop at Rough Trade Records boss Geoff Travis. (The band were looking to leave the label for a better deal at around this time.)
I include it here because of the lines: "I didn't realise that you wrote poetry, I didn't realise you wrote such bloody awful poetry." I'll try to get better.
*I could have gone for Poetry in Motion by Johnny Tillotson but it seemed too obvious. And it's not as good.
