Track of the Week - 9 December 2018
RIP Pete Shelley
One of the first albums I bought was the Buzzcocks compilation Singles Going Steady. Produced for the American market in 1979, by the time of its 1981 release in the UK the group had already split.
With not too many other records to play at the time I gave it repeated listens and knew it inside out. If there's a list of great compilation albums this deserves to be very high on it.
Singer-songwriter Pete Shelley, who died this week aged 63, was responsible for writing most of those early songs. His genius was crafting wonderful pop songs and then taking the energy of punk rock to deliver them.
I was tempted to stick a link to the entire album up as it's hugely difficult to choose one above the rest. It is track of the week though so today's choice is Promises, which reached number 20 in 1978. Ask me again tomorrow and it could be something different. It's all good.
