The Undertones: Wednesday Week

Track of the Week - 25 August 2019

I won't trouble you with how or why but last week I was in Aylesbury's Waterside Theatre watching a musical version of The Addams Family.

The general idea of the plot was that Wednesday Addams (there's the link people!) had a fallen in love with a 'normal' boy and his family were going to the Addams mansion for a meal - with hilarious consequences!*

It was one of those summer school productions which featured lots of crowd scenes and large musical numbers so that dozens of kids could appear on stage and the theatre could coin in the admission money from parents and grandparents. The second half was so absent of plot that poor old Uncle Fester had to 'fall in love with the Moon' so that the show could be dragged out.

So my Wednesday song is Wednesday Week by The Undertones - it reached number 11 in July 1980.

The band had polished up their original punky edges and produced a perfect two and a quarter minute piece of pop music. It sounds like a cover of a 60s song that was made for Feargal Sharkey's quivery vocal but was written by guitarist John O'Neill.

Its probably my favourite song with a day of the week in the title. Yours may be Friday I'm In Love, Blue Monday, Monday, Monday or something I can't think of right now. Discuss...

* I may have different ideas of hilarious. The good people of Aylesbury mostly gave it a standing ovation. Heaven only knows how excited they'd be if they saw Jurgen Klinsmann's overhead kick goal against Everton in 1994.
