Simon Dupree and the Big Sound: Kites

Track of the Week - 22 November 2020

I saw a kite while I was out on one of my government-approved walks this week. Not one of the kind with strings but a red kite (milvus milvus). They were persecuted to the point of extinction in the UK but a re-introduction programme has been massively successful over the last 30 years or so.

It's not unusual to see them over certain towns but I don't think I've seen one flying quite so low near where we live. It wasn't much above roof height. Just enjoying the thermals. Good to see. Lifted the spirits on a grey day.

Kites by Simon Dupree and the Big Sound is about the string sort of kite but if you've read this far you're probably as bothered by that as I am. The song was a top ten hit in 1967 but apparently the band hated it.

It's a cover version of a Rooftop Singers song that their management had pushed them into. They didn't like this 'psychedelic' sound, preferring to play R&B. They never troubled the top 40 again and broke up two years later.

I think it's great but what do I know?
