Track of the Week - 12 September 2021
Last Sunday I was in London with my good friends David and Ben to see synth-pop/new wave group Heaven 17 at the Roundhouse in Chalk Farm.
The group were giving a live performance of the first two The Human League albums, Reproduction and Travelogue (and they threw in a Human League EP and a couple of their own songs - (We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang and Temptation as a bonus.)
(If you're wondering why Heaven 17 were doing Human League albums they were the Human League at that time until they split in 1980. Glenn Gregory took the vocal duties in place of the absent Phil Oakey.)
I had Reproduction on cassette (not sure if it's still in the cupboard or wore out back in the 80s) so throughly enjoyed that part of the evening, I was less sure on Travelogue which had a much colder, more uncommercial sound.
(You can read an excellent review of the evening at David's Gig Diaries blog.)
Best Human League tracks of the night for me were Morale and Zero as a Limit. (The Heaven 17 songs were an excellent upbeat closer to the night too.) (Lot of brackets this week!)
Morale is brilliant but works best as an introductory piece to their version of You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'. It's a bit sad too so let's go upbeat (eventually) with Zero as a Limit.
