Soft Cell: Martin

Track of the Week - 23 January 2022

When I was out shopping last week I saw a bloke called Martin who I used to play five-a-side football with back in the nineties. Yep, that's the link, I've got nothing else.

I think it was him anyway, he had a mask on. I didn't say hello, it's been 25 years or so, not got a lot to talk about really.

But it's an excuse to play Martin by synthpop giants Soft Cell. Wikipedia tells me it's inspired by a 1978 horror film also called Martin which now makes perfect sense.

Martin was on a 12" that came with early copies of the 1983 album The Art of Falling Apart. It's a decent enough album but this track is better than most of it to be honest.

OK, it's ten minutes long and is a bit weird towards the end but nearly 40 years on I still think it's great.
