Frank Black: Men in Black

Track of the Week - 15 January 2023

If you follow football you'll know there's a saying about the best officials being the ones you don't notice. At yesterday's Swindon v Grimsby game you couldn't help but notice them.

Firstly referee Stuart Purkiss was knocked out by a full-blooded clearance, stretchered off and taken to hospital*. His replacement, assistant referee Kevin Morris (I think), seemed more than ready to take over, and when he did his first major decision was to send off Grimsby's Danny Amos for denial of a goalscoring opportunity.

And with five goals and nine substitutions it was a busy day for the 'men in black' at the County Ground.

Frank Black's Men in Black isn't about football but rather the 'quasi-government officials' believed to harass UFO witnesses.  Hopefully I've proved I can make the stretch this week to this 1995 single that reached number 37 in the UK. It also appears on the decent The Cult of Ray album that followed in January 1996.

* He has now been released from hospital. Good news.
