Regular readers (thank you) will recognise that it's about this time of year that I go to the Cheltenham Festival. For the last few years I've worn a specific pair of shoes which have, over time, become unfit for any other use.
I've worn these less good shoes because we have a couple of pints at a pub about 15 minutes walk away and part of the journey takes in a field and track alongside the racecourse. I wouldn't want to risk good shoes on that walk at this time of year.
On arrival at the track on Tuesday I felt something wasn't quite right with the right shoe. The toe of the upper and the sole weren't quite connecting as they should. Things got worse as it then came further adrift and the sole ruptured as well.
It held together enough for the walk back with only a slightly wet foot to report. The shoes will now go off for textile recycling and I'll have to think of something else to wear next year.
Hole in My Shoe was a 1967 number two for English rock band Traffic. Seventeen years later it was covered by actor Nigel Planer in his guise as Neil from eighties comedy classic The Young Ones. Coincidentally it also reached number two.
Here's the original.
