Track of the Week - 28 May 2023
I went to the speedway this week. I'd only ever been once before, probably in the late 1970s. My brother's a fan so I'd accumulated a few years' birthday presents from him and rolled them into one event that he took me to.
Now our local team are currently on hiatus/never coming back so we had a trek over to Peterborough to see bottom of the Sports Insure Premiership Peterborough Panthers take on one off the bottom of the table and A47 rivals King's Lynn Stars. (Peterborough picked up their first win of the season with an emphatic 53-37 scoreline.) I enjoyed it, I'd certainly go again.
This opened up plenty of Track of the Week possibilities - Speedway by either Elvis Presley or Morrissey for instance. There was a chance the meeting might end up in a 'Super Heat' when Glenn Frey would have been bang in the running.
There was also an intriguing mix of music in between heats - from the more obvious, like The Final Countdown or Kashmir, to nineties hits like Groove Is in The Heart and Killer
There was another kind of appropriate song that popped up that I haven't heard for years and is going to be the selection this week - The Race by Swiss electropopsters Yello.
It got to number seven in 1988 and had a memorable video but seems to have disappeared from consciousness apart from at the East of England Arena. More power to them for keeping it alive I say.
(It is a bit 'flashy' and some of those accidents look terrible if you don't like that sort of thing. It doesn't sit as well with me as it might have done back then,)
