This one is chosen as I had a camera for my birthday (thanks Mrs!) Although I've already taken more than eight pictures it gives me the opportunity to select this 1982 track from the Australian indie rock band's debut album Send Me a Lullaby which popped up on an old mixtape I was listening to in the car this week.
The story of a jealous lover, the lyric is whiny yet slightly menacing set over a simple guitar and bass line until 2:36 when Lindy Morrison launches into a stunning drum solo. There is also a joke in the song* (at 3:35) , albeit turned into a more literal, threatening representation as the story reaches its conclusion.
I like the small details in stories so the facts that the main protagonist was 'working at the ice rink' or that an actor had the 'same publicity shot for six years' play well with me.
The Go-Betweens became a great pop round from about their fourth album but this is a superbly edgy post-punk track.
*there aren't enough jokes in non-comedy records. I can think of one in a Nightingales song, maybe I'll have to dig that out.
