I discovered recently that this month was the 25th anniversary of the formation of mine and some of my real friends 5-a-side football team, Kylie Minogue's Love Children.
'Why the crazy name' I hear you ask? We formed to take part in a national competition, The Carling Black Label Striker Cup, where as well as winning there was a prize for the team with the best name.
Miss Minogue's sugary-sweet pop was all over the charts at the time so she was the ideal choice for our name and the face for the screen-printed t-shirts that passed for our kit.
When we were at the Link Centre not winning a match (or getting the best name prize, bah!) this was number two in the charts.
What happened next?
- We didn't give up on the football. We were a fixture on Monday nights in the cages at the Oasis for four years before turning into the Sunday football team KMLC FC. We remain firm friends (with one exception) and are known as The Kylies.
- Kylie herself became a music phenomenon, sex symbol, all round global icon and general example of all that's good in the world turning out some of the defining pop songs of the '90s and 2000s. It's probably a coincidence and little to do with us.
- England reached the 1990 World Cup semi-finals, Gazza cried and the gentrification process of turning football spectating into a middle-class pastime began. The Premier League and the enormous amount of money swilling around the game followed shortly after. Again, I don't think that's our fault.
