Track of the week - 24 May 2015
This week, for a change, I have something brand spanking new for you.
The new Cinerama CD, Valentina, landed on the mat this week. It's the second album I've bought in a fortnight. (I'm sure I'll annoy you with something from the new Fall album soon enough.)
From my mid-teens to late twenties what money I had that wasn't being spent on socialising or going to football mostly went on records. Working in the Town Centre it was easy to go to WH Smith, Woolworth, Our Price, Music Market, Kempsters or the one on the end of Curtis Street that I can't remember the name of.
I'd pick up new records, old ones to complete collections by artists I liked or those that had inspired the bands I listened to. Those days are long gone!
Valentina is an interesting concept as the entire album is a re-working of the 2012 recording by singer-songwriter David Gedge's other band, The Wedding Present. Where the Weddoes (as we call them) are guitar-driven and energetic, Cinerama are more thoughtful and dare I say musical.
On first listen I prefer the Wedding Present treatment but this track, with vocals by sometime Gedge bassist and co-songwriter Terry de Castro, is the standout and deserves a wider audience.
