Sex Pistols: Satellite

Track of the Week  - 19 July 2015

Mrs Tea at Johnnys and I went off to Woodstock this week and as we wanted to take the scenic route we took our recently-purchased satellite navigation system. (I'm so up to date!)

I told you last week about Mrs Tea at Johnnys' cycling obsession - well the current voice on the satnav is American former professional racing cyclist Dave Zabriskie. As well as giving directions he tells us to 'put the bikes on the roof' and suchlike.

Anyhow, all that is a weak link to get this week's track. It's a lesser-known effort by the Pistols, the b-side of the superb 1977 single Holidays in the Sun, and is one that has stuck in my mind.

It's not terribly punky with only John Lydon's vocal making it stand out from the 'pub rock' sound that punk grew from. Lyrically* it's not great either, the best bit referring to the satellite in question not as one in the sky but rather the towns they played that were 'satellite[s] of London'.

*although it does contain the word lavatory. Can't be many instances of that in pop. Where's me Jumper by The Sultans of Ping FC being one more I can think of.
