Track of the Week - 29 November 2015
After a long day working in London on Thursday I made my way to the taxi office by the station to organise the last leg of my journey home. As I was waiting, another chap came in and asked to book a taxi to somewhere not too far from where I live.
Before he completed his booking I politely interjected and asked if he might want to share my already ordered cab. He accepted the offer. We introduced ourselves and had a nice chat on the cab ride about our various lines of business and the upcoming World Heavyweight boxing match amongst other things.
As we reached our destination the gentleman advised the driver that there would be two drops and as we pulled up to where I was getting out he advised me that he would pay the whole bill. I protested but he said it was a thank you for my invitation to him to be included in my already booked ride home. How nice is that?
That's a much happier ending than in this week's song. The Kindness of Strangers is from Nick Cave's brilliant but brutal 1996 album Murder Ballads. The title of this song is ironic and the sad tale centres on a poor Mary Bellows who was found 'cuffed to the bed with a rag in her mouth and a bullet in her head.'
It's one of the gentler songs on the album where generally the body and swear count is on the high side.
