Track of the Week - 17 January 2016
A step away from the usual 'what happened to me this week/diary of a no-name'* stuff to reflect on the death of David Bowie earlier this week.
Growing up and developing my own musical tastes in the late seventies/early eighties you didn't need to dig too deep before you found yourself listening to Bowie records. A slice of my vinyl collection still contains some of his classic seventies albums and he was one of my musical heroes (if you excuse the pun).
My friends and I would occasionally to go to the Level 3 nightclub in town for Bowie nights where he was the only artist played and I did see the great man play live twice. At Milton Keynes in 1983 on the Serious Moonlight tour (I can only remember how far away I was from the stage) and at Wembley on the Glass Spider tour (I can only remember it being a bit rubbish).
After the mid-eighties Bowie dropped out of my new listening list but I still have those earlier albums to rely on.
I've chosen this track from my favourite Bowie Album, Station to Station, as my 'thank you for the music' song. OK, it's a cover version but the arrangement and his delivery make it as good a love song as you'll find anywhere.
*But I'll tell you about a conversation that happened...
Other person: "That was sad about David Bowie, wasn't it?"
Me: "Yes, but he left us lots of great music to enjoy."
Other Person: "I haven't got any. I didn't like it to tell you the truth."
Me: "It's still sad though?"
Other Person: "Yes, it's still sad."
