Hot Chip: Wrestlers

Track of the Week - 31 January 2016

My friend Stuart and I went over to see our friend Kevin this week. The reason for the trip? To watch the WWE's Royal Rumble over a curry and a chat.

Kevin and I were well into the wrestling in our younger years (the so-called Attitude Era meant wrestling was the best damn soap opera on TV) but now this is the only event we watch. Stu is a more occasional viewer but the three of us have been getting together for the '30 man over the top rope extravaganza' that is the Rumble since the early nineties.

There are lots of new faces in the 'squared circle' these days which make our prediction games difficult. We make the best of it though predicting things like number of people with beards, tattoos, wearing trunks, all three or none (a Noah!) and also number of people in the ring at the same time and adding numbers of entrants into the match to the beards, tattoos and trunks to come up with what's called 'Stu's Magic Number'*.

There are no prizes or monetary reward for these efforts. Just bragging rights. (I won.)

Hot Chip's Wrestlers is not one of the better tracks from the excellent 2008 album Made in the Dark but is good enough to get the nod this week. It's a tale of a struggling relationship but with wrestling images woven in, like 'don't hit me with a chair', 'throw the towel in' and the little-known wrestling move - the Willie Nelson!
