Track of the Week - 21 August 2016
(I shall refer to the band as the APs from here - I'm sure the spambots will already be having a a field day with me)
I'm really not a fan of shoe shopping but every now and again, when your work shoes are falling to pieces, you have to bite the bullet and go and get a pair. I also bought a pair of new 'Beatle boots' last week (they were in a sale) so I really have been going through my shoe money lately.
And that means I get to introduce you to one of my very favourite bands you've never heard of. From Ohio, the APs produced six mostly ace albums* between 1990 and 2001. If you're into pigeon-holing then there's some alt-country, alt-rock and Americana in their work. While they can be very dark, lyrically they are one of the best bands I've heard.
This song, from their fourth album - The Known Universe, is an example of that but it's a bit of a jumble, there's no real theme. From desperation of finding a way out of a hole then wanting "to crawl back in", to the amusement of seeing devil-worshippers' incorrect spelling "satin lives in Hell" to the finality of "spending everything we have - that shoe money", it goes on a bit of a wordy mystery tour.
But none of that prepares you for the jarring, desolate "and the birds will gather around our heads and they'll peck at our corn-like teeth" that comes out of nowhere. And all to a cracking tune. It's oddly brilliant. The accompanying film is just plain odd
*I'm not so fond of the last one.
