Track of the Week - 14 August 2016
One of my work family is getting married soon (good luck Mark!) so we had a little stag party for him this week.
He's a big fan of the whole superhero business so some of my talented colleagues arranged a themed evening. Mark became the masked 'Super Smiley Man' for the night, tackling some pre-recorded video challenges (running to Pizza Express in full outfit with sidekick was the highlight) and dealing with the various 'Wheel of Misfortune' forfeits. It was great fun.
So, on the superhero theme (loosely - this is about not being a superhero), here's Cinerama's 2001 single Superman.
Cinerama started life as a side-project of David Gedge, singer-songwriter of The Wedding Present, but became a fully-fledged group in their own right. Their sound is more orchestral and soundtrack-like than the 'Weddoes' ever-developing indie guitar style.
IMHO (as the young people say) Mr. Gedge is the greatest ever songwriter on the subject of human relationships. Here's an example. Listen to this, then everything else he's recorded.
And if my endorsement isn't good enough for you, here's what the late, great John Peel had to say: “The boy Gedge has written some of the best love songs of the 'Rock ‘n’ Roll' era. You may dispute this, but I’m right and you’re wrong!”
