Marc Riley & The Creepers: Jumper Clown

Track of the Week - 18 December 2016

You may have noticed that Friday was 'Wear Your Christmas Jumper to Work Day'. My employer is very big in its support for charity so they gave us the go-ahead to wear these woollen abominations to raise money for Shelter.

It's an excellent cause and you can donate here without having to make yourself look silly. When I was a lad these jumpers were worn by evening regional tv presenters, disc jockeys and weathermen* and were quite obviously naff and to be avoided at all costs.

A few years on, someone has found a job lot of these in a warehouse, persuaded someone that they're cool and people are buying them in their droves in some sort of ironic post-modern way. Funny old game.

I say wear what you want people. Don't follow the herd. Don't become just another Jumper Clown.

This 1984 single is part of the continuing feud between Marc Riley** and Mark E. Smith after Riley was fired from The Fall. Smith is the Jumper Clown in question.

*You can understand why they might hold negative connotations.

**Yes, the one off the radio they used to call Lard.
