The White Stripes: The Hardest Button to Button

Track of the Week - 28 May

I've been out and about with work this week, including a trip to Northampton on Friday. That meant getting a hire car which could have been fun but wasn't.

I'm used to driving a 1.2l Polo, the car I was allotted was a rather large Vauxhall Meriva. I didn't get on with it. I found it sluggish in slow gears (that's after I had to ask how to start it. Foot on the clutch! Why on earth?) and being a tall man I sit a long way back which meant my side vision was partially obscured but that wasn't the worst thing.

The worst thing was the hand brake. It didn't have the traditional lever style that I've used during my entire 30 years-odd of driving, oh no. It was some sort of stupid button. It seemed ok to turn on but how to turn it off? I still don't know now.

I was trying to drive the entire two hours home so that I didn't have to come to a stop and praying that if I did have to stop it wouldn't be on a hill. (Apologies to the man stuck behind me at a roundabout on the A43). I have never encountered a harder button to button.

I don't think that's what the White Stripes were singing about in their 2003 single which got to number 23 in the UK chart. If they were they were ahead of their time. It's from the album Elephant in case you're interested.
