Track of the Week - 2 July 2017
This week my work took me to Norfolk. The Showground near Norwich to be precise where several of my work family and I were representing our business at the Royal Norfolk Show.
We were among 700 stands, 3,000 animals, various interesting food options and all sorts of agricultural machinery. Despite shocking weather the day before and a miserable first morning we put on a good display for our visitors with ceramic piggy bank painting for children a particular highlight.
So to celebrate being out in the country for a few days here's a track that scores on a couple of counts. I'm not using the Cliff Richard version because 1) it's Cliff Richard and 2) the Farmer's Boys were from Norwich.
Part of a 'Sound of Young Norwich'* scene in the early 1980s, the Farmer's Boys released three highly enjoyable, ramshackle singles on independent labels. Then snapped up by EMI they were polished and thrown at the charts.
They missed. July 1984's In the Country was their fourth single for EMI but only peaked at 44. Two more failed singles later and the band had split due to 'electrical differences'. I prefer their earlier stuff but this is a bit of fun but I can't condone chasing cows or sleeping with horses.
* The Higsons, Serious Drinking, Testcard F and The Fire Hydrant Men are all worth checking out.
