The Pogues: The Galway Races

Track of the Week - 18 March 2018

Regular readers (if there are any) will know that I spend a few days at the Cheltenham Festival at this time of year, every year. This year was no exception and if you're interested the winners I backed didn't pay for the losers.

Previously I've picked songs about horses as a track of the week but this time I'm going for races as the theme (with a side order of St Patrick's Day.) It's Galway not Cheltenham but a lot of the same feelings expressed in the lyrics can be applied.

The Galway Races is a traditional Irish song made famous by the likes of The Dubliners and The Chieftains but I'm going with The Pogues version.

From the excellent 1988 album If I Should Fall from Grace with God this has been trimmed from a three song traditional medley*. Shane MacGowan and the band are on top form here.
