Sinead O'Connor: Someday My Prince Will Come

Track of the Week - 29 April 2018

This week I met up with some of my old work family (and some of the new team too) to go and watch a play in Bristol - one of the work family was directing so we wanted to show our support.

The play was Knowledge and a Girl (The Snow White Case) by Howard Barker. If you like plays that are packed with jokes, people's trousers falling down at inappropriate moments or gentle country house murder mysteries then it's probably not for you. If you like challenging drama that is a bit out there then it's likely to be more your cup of tea. It was very good with the wicked queen giving a stand-out performance.

The play seems to take its inspiration from the end of the original Brothers Grimm tale of Little Snow White where the wicked queen is made to put on red-hot metal shoes in the end and dance until she drops dead. Cheery, eh?

So we need a Snow White song this week. Sinead O'Connor recorded her version of Someday My Prince Will Come for the compilation Stay Awake: Various Interpretations of Music from Vintage Disney Films in 1988.

It's very different from the version that was in the 1937 film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It's desolate, desperate and devoid of almost all hope.

Much like the play.
