Ian Dury and the Blockheads: What a Waste

Track of the Week - 13 May 2018

Tenuous link week! In a less eventful few days I went to the tip. or the Household Waste Recycling Centre as it likes to call itself.

There was a bit of a waste of time involved as, even though I was there at 9am, I had to wait for more than half an hour before I could discard my garden waste, bits of metal and old electrical goods. I've learnt to take a book with me.

What a Waste was Ian Dury and the Blockheads first hit single, reaching number nine in 1978. A song about finding happiness in your vocation, Dury claimed he wrote it to make people question their lives.

It slots into a great run of singles from the band - after Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll and Sweet Gene Vincent, before Hit Me with your Rhythm Stick and Reasons to be Cheerful Part 3 - good times.
