Track of the Week - 17 June 2018
Sad news alert.
My dad died this week. He had been suffering with Parkinson's Disease. (If you're a regular reader you probably worked out that he was the 'elderly gentleman of my acquaintance' who has featured a few times over the past few months.)
If you or any of your loved ones have been affected by Parkinson's you have my sympathy. My dad wasn't always the most tolerant man but he said that he wouldn't have wished his illness on his worst enemy.
If you haven't been affected and would like to help the people who are trying to keep it that way you can donate to the Parkinson's UK Charity here.
I have many things to thank my dad for of course but I'll focus on a love for music in this post. While my musical tastes may have been formed by friends, my age, the music press, John Peel etc. my brother, sister and I grew up in a house where music played a big part.
Not playing but listening. Particularly on Sundays. After Sunday school and before Sunday lunch the record player would be on. Sometimes it would be children's records like The Jungle Book Soundtrack or Children's Favourites with the likes of Jon Pertwee singing.
And sometimes my dad would cue up his old 7" singles. The likes of The Beatles, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, The Everly Brothers and Johnny Cash would have been played* as would this week's choice.
The House of the Rising Sun by The Animals was one of his absolute favourites. A re-working of a traditional folk song it was a massive transatlantic hit in 1964 and is recognised as a 1960's British pop classic.
So thanks dad, this one's for you.
Love,
Paul
* my mum was much more on the Shirley Bassey, Cliff Richard part of the listening scale back then.
