Track of the Week - 15 March 2020
Regular readers (sorry to you all) will be familiar with my yearly trips to the Cheltenham Festival. I was there again for three days this year but backed more losers than winners. By a long way.
Beck had released a couple of albums in the year before this record was released but Loser catapulted him into the mainstream. It made number ten in the US and 15 in the UK.
It's from the magnificent 1994 album Mellow Gold which is one of my favourite albums that doesn't involve Mark E Smith or David Gedge.
I just love the lo-fi feel to it. The lyrics are all over the place but highly quotable and there's a great opening line - "In the time of chimpanzees I was a monkey."*
* To me it suggests nearly being what's needed or what's most admired. You might nearly be a winner but ultimately you're a loser. (I had a few second places. Can you tell?)
