Adam and the Ants: Cartrouble

Track of the Week - 22 March 2020

I know there are much bigger things going on in the world right now but I'll have three months (at least) to feature things like distancing, isolation and staying at home. So this week I'm keeping it personal.

It was time to say goodbye to my car this week. It failed the MOT and needed much more work doing than the car is worth. A practical decision had to be made rather than an emotional one.

It wasn't much trouble at all during the time I had it (13 years, 70,000 miles) so Cartrouble by Adam and the Ants is a little unfair. But it's the first thing I could think of with car in the title, a good tune and a very early single purchase of mine.

The song had first appeared as Cartrouble (Parts 1 & 2) on the excellent Dirk Wears White Sox album from 1979. I'm going with the reworked version which featured a different line-up to the album and was released in March 1980.

It didn't trouble the charts until the following year, reaching number 33, by which time the Ants had had three top ten hits and Adam was on the verge of becoming one of the biggest stars in pop.
