Track of the Week - 16 May 2021
(This post has not been sponsored!)
This week I took Mrs Tea at Johnny's' car for its MOT and annual service. As it's a Smart (ForTwo) and they're related to the Mercedes-Benz company it was off to the Mercedes garage.
I needed a hire car to get home so I was presented with an A180 (I think, I'm not great on cars.) Now it's a very nice car but is longer and wider than I'm used to. It was also a manual gearbox when I've only been driving an automatic for about 15 months.
I'm not moaning. As good as the car is it's a bit stressful when you know there's a £750 insurance excess hanging over you if you knack it in any way while you have it. It's ok, I didn't.
Mercedes Benz was recorded in October 1970 by Janis Joplin who wrote it with folk singer Bob Neuwirth after hearing the first line of a song by poet Michael McClure. It was the last thing Joplin recorded, she died of an accidental heroin overdose just three days later.
Sung in the a capella style, it came to prominence when used by Mercedes as a TV advertisement in 1995. The song may in fact be focusing on a rejection of consumerism.
