Track of the Week - 12 December 2021
I've written a couple of times recently about going back to watch Swindon Town FC. There was a bit of excitement this week as the club picked up a home draw against Premier League champions Manchester City, managed by Pep Guardiola, in the FA Cup Third Round.
With the County Ground not being the biggest there's no guarantee I'll be able to get a ticket, and we have to consider the prospect of games being played being closed doors again while the omicron variant of Covid-19 runs through the country. So I'd better use this week to shout 'Hey Pep!'
The track is a highlight from The Fall's patchy 1996 album The Light User Syndrome. Singer/songwriter Mark E Smith was a Manchester City fan and some people claimed he had precognitive powers (I don't buy this.)
Even with that I don't think this song is a prediction of Guardiola taking over at the club but is about pep pills ("It's called speed, I wrote a song about it") and includes another familiar Smith subject of having a go at record companies.
It's a belter.
