This week I went (with some good friends) to see some international T20 cricket, England v South Africa at the County Ground, Bristol. It was an enjoyable game, with the right result, but I'd say the ground facilities struggled with the sheer number of people.
There was a very large temporary stand (the Mike Procter stand) on one side of the ground which gave a good view if not an ideal experience of people walking past you, standing up, and causing congestion at the steps. A small gripe on what was a great day out.
All this stand talk points me to Stand by R.E.M. Much poppier than the alternative rock were we used to from them at the time guitarist Peter Buck called it: "the stupidest song we've ever written. That's not necessarily a bad thing though."
It barely scraped into the top 50 but the band were often to be found in the upper echelons of the 'hit parade' for the next decade and a half. It's from the very good 1988 album Green. Get that in your ears.
