Track of the Week - 18 September 2022
I was thinking of going down the 'silence' route this week. For what people are calling 'obvious reasons'. But then something happened that meant I end up with quite the opposite.
I take it you have smoke and/or carbon monoxide alarms in your house. Well why is it that the battery always decides to run out during the night?
At five o'clock yesterday morning the intrusive beeping noise started. In my tired state I removed the carbon monoxide alarm, took it downstairs to try to change the battery, which involved finding a tiny screwdriver, before realising it was a sealed unit, but as it had gone quiet I stuffed it in a shoe in the conservatory and went back to bed.
Twenty minutes later the noise started again. I'd picked the wrong alarm. It was a smoke alarm that needed a battery removing so we could get some sleep and replace it later that morning.
Which is a very long way round to introducing a song with a smoke alarm on it. Boxoctosis Alarum is from The Fall's 2004 album Interim, a collection of live and studio rehearsals from that time.
The song had appeared as Open the Boxoctosis #2 on the brilliant 2003 album The Real New Fall LP (Formerly Country on the Click). An early mix of that album had appeared on the internet which led Mark E Smith to re-work it but the original Boxoctosis is out there to listen to if you wish.
But here's the one with the alarm on...
