Skee-Lo: I wish

Track of the Week - 5 March 2017

(Tenuous link klaxon!)

It's been 'Diversity Week' at work and among the series of events that took place I was lucky enough to get a seat for the presentation by John Amaechi OBE.

A former NBA player (there's the link), Amaechi is now a psychologist, business coach, author, educator, broadcaster, public speaker... lots of things.

I don't know whether I've ever spent a couple of hours in the presence of such an erudite, principled person before. He was inspiring and thought-provoking and someone you wish you could carry about with you to keep you on the right track. As he's six foot nine (and busy) that would be very difficult so I'll have to settle for following him on Twitter where he adds 'slayer of trolls' to his CV.

As he used to be a baller (in the sense of being a basketball player, not someone who likes an extravagant money-driven lifestyle) I can use this track by one-hit wonder Skee-Lo.

Mr -Lo wished he could be a bit taller and a baller (among lots of other things) in I Wish which reached number 15 in 1995. Apparently it was nominated for Best Rap Solo Performance at the 1996 Grammys but lost out to Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise.

I'm fairly tall already so don't wish to be taller, I'm not a basketball fan so don't want to be a baller and I'd much rather have a Pontiac Firebird than a Chevrolet Impala so can't really relate to Mr -Lo.

I would like to be a bit more John Amaechi though so I'll work on that.
