Track of the Week - 29 October 2017
Filming for a work project this week took me to several locations in Wiltshire but we started off in the village of Rowde.
It seems like an attractive, friendly little place - surprisingly busy with traffic though when you're trying to film outside on a cold morning!
Looking for a 'village' song* I chose this James effort from 1985 which comes from the EP James II (and was later included on Village Fire which compiled their first two records).
There was some decent stuff in the band's early nineties commercial work but it doesn't capture the eccentricity and excitement in their earlier work like this.
It appears to be criticising "lightweight", "cosmetic music" and "second-hand ideas" "built on complacency". You can decide whether they should have listened to that before their later career.
* I was avoiding the Village People and I'd already used The Fall's stunning Mister Rode. I did debate repeating selection with myself but I don't think I'm quite there yet.
