Lonnie Donegan: Cumberland Gap

Track of the Week - 1 October 2017

On Friday I headed for London with most of my work family for an industry awards do. We were delighted to take a couple of wins for some massive projects we've delivered over the last 12 months.

We stayed at the Cumberland Hotel in Marble Arch. When I got there I was surprised to see art prints and other paraphernalia featuring rock legend Jimi Hendrix. I asked about this and the chap on reception told me that the hotel was where Hendrix was living before his untimely death in 1970.

Rather than Hendrix though I'm going with the name of the hotel to link into Cumberland Gap by King of Skiffle Lonnie Donegan, Britain's most successful and influential recording artist before The Beatles (according to British Hit Singles and Albums.)

The first of three number ones for Donegan it topped the charts in 1957. The song probably originates in the 19th century, was first recorded in 1924 and has been many times since. Lonnie and his band own it here*.

* If I stay there again I can always wheel out the Wedding Present version. They have a good stab at it too.
