The Wedding Present: England

Track of the Week - 15 October 2017

This week some of my chums and I went to our local Arts Centre to watch comedian Simon Day. He did four short sets as his characters Billy Bleach, Geoffrey Allerton, Tony Beckton and Brian Pern. Some of it was laugh out loud funny and some characters worked better than others but it was a very amusing way to spend a couple of hours.

Allerton is a poet and before his set the big screen on stage showed his poem 'England' from the vastly underrated TV show Bellamy's People. That sequence is at the bottom of this post and is recommended.

That poem ties in nicely to this Wedding Present track of the same name. Released this year as part of the Home Internationals EP (I used Wales in July), England is largely instrumental apart from a poem by Simon Armitage called 'The English'.

So start with a Wedding Present live version...

... but be sure to finish with Geoffrey Allerton...
