Track of the Week - 15 July 2018
It was my dad's funeral this week. Obviously a sad day but we had a good day. The mood was helped by my mum who was the proverbial tower of strength.
The weather was fabulous (he'd have liked that) and as we waited outside the chapel there was a low-level flypast from the Red Arrows. (We didn't organise that - we weren't far away from RAF Fairford's Royal International Air Tattoo.)
The old chap didn't leave us many instructions but he did want to be played out to Take Five by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Written by Paul Desmond, this jazz standard was released in 1959 but became a hit two years later. It's the biggest-selling jazz single of all time.
As we left the chapel to walk down to his last resting-place we could hear strains of the music following us down. It's a tune I've always associated with him, hearing it will now have an extra emotional charge - happy tears.
