Jane: It's a Fine Day

Track of the Week - 25 April 2021

I'm sure something will happen so I don't have to write about the weather soon but this week wasn't it.

It was nice enough to work in the garden, go to the garden centre, and sit in a pub garden with some of my old work family but as I did a garden song last week it's back to the weather theme this.

It's a Fine Day was a 1983 single by Jane. Written by poet/songwriter Edward Barton, Jane was his friend Jane Lancaster. It's a remarkable a cappella delivery which made number five in the Indie charts.

(I certainly prefer it to the Opus III version in 1992 which had a different singer, a bit of electronic music behind it, reached number five in the UK singles chart and was a big hit across Europe.)

I think it has one of the most poignant passages I've heard:

"Sitting in this field
I remember how we were going to sit in this field but never quite did
Rain or appointments or something"

So this is for all the people who were going to sit in a field but never quite did.
