The Psychedelic Furs: President Gas

Track of the Week - 13 June 2021

Tea at Johnny's Towers had a gas engineer visit this week in hope of getting the smart meter to work properly. What might have been a 30 minute job in normal circumstances turned out to be anything but and took him about three hours.

He had to deal with problems like the types of fitting, how close the pipe was to the housing, the fact that the first meter he installed had a software failure but overcame these (and probably more he didn't mention) and got everything working.

He also kept the same upbeat demeanour throughout so it's only fair that with the power vested in me* I declare him President Gas.

New Wave band The Psychedelic Furs' President Gas is the opening track on the 1982 album Forever Now (I'm sure I have this on cassette). I wasn't really into the Furs at the time but this song, Pretty in Pink and following album Mirror Moves changed my mind later in the eighties.

For a long time they were top of my list of bands I wished I'd seen live. I finally got to do that in 2005 at the Wireless Festival in Hyde Park when the reformed band were early on a bill that New Order headlined. I didn't really enjoy them to be honest. Underwhelming.

But there's always President Gas. A great song with Richard Butler doing a bit of a David Bowie impression on vocals. The line "it's sick, the price of medicine' could also apply this week after I picked up my prescription.

* no power at all.
