Track of the Week - 5 February 2023
This week I and some of my chums went to see writer, DJ, journalist, raconteur, well, lots of things really, Danny Baker on his ‘At Last… The Sausage Sandwich Tour!’
The man has certainly lived an interesting life and knows how to tell a story too. A properly entertaining evening.
One thing he mentioned, almost in passing, was that his nan had a pub renamed in her honour after she died. Ma Baker was a formidable presence in her area of London and it was felt a good way to remember her. Although there may also have been a degree of how much money she spent in that establishment over the years!
Boney M's Ma Baker wasn't about Danny's nan but rather the American crime matriarch Ma Barker (the name slightly changed to sound better.) The German-Caribbean disco group landed a UK number two in 1977 with the song.
It bears a fair resemblance to their previous year's hit 'Daddy Cool' but they wouldn't be the first, or last, group to keep hammering a successful theme.
