Yes, another weather song. But this is specific rather than general weather so don't give up just yet.
On Tuesday I was in Bristol with some very good friends for the third one-day cricket international between England and Ireland. It had rained overnight but play started on time and England were putting the Irish bowlers to the sword at nine runs an over.
A shower had been forecast for about four o'clock but it was more than an hour earlier when the dark clouds started to gather. Everybody in the ground could see it coming but the players were still on the field when... down came the rain. Hard!
It must have rained for about 20-30 minutes but just as it was stopping we were informed the match was abandoned. This was met with surprise. There was no more rain forecast, there was plenty more time scheduled for play so why not wait a bit. But no, that was it.
We were told there were puddles on the outfield and on the bowlers' run-ups. But as we walked back to the car the story developed into reports of the ground staff being slow to get the covers on and water getting under the covers. There was a general feel that nobody involved was that bothered about the game taking place. To add to this as we'd had 31 overs play there were no refunds (that cut-off was 30.) Heigh-ho!
Comedy record Down Came The Rain was a 1965 single by Mister Murray. Songwriter Mitch Murray had penned hits for the likes of Freddie and the Dreamers, Gerry and the Pacemakers, and The Dave Clark Five.
And then he did this for some reason.
If I remember rightly, my dad could do a fairly decent impression of the chorus.
